Search Matters...especially on your own site
In Information Today, Paula Hane summarized an IDC report by Sue Feldman summarized at a recent Fast conference (how's that for a tertiary reference?) about the untapped potential of the web. Apparently, Feldman claims that up to 70 percent of search traffic is actually not going through Google and friends. Rather, people are going directly to the portals they think will have the answers and searching on those sites. The opportunity or challenge is to make sure your site search doesn't stink, and, to monetize the searches by incorporating contextual ads. Fast just happens to have a product that you can use for that, if you decide to leave Googleville.
